The ELSA Study – Type 1 Diabetes Screening for Children (30/08/24)

Posted on:

What?

The ELSA Study is testing children for type 1 diabetes. We are testing for antibodies. Antibodies are protein markers found in the blood. A simple blood test will tell us if the antibodies for type 1 diabetes are there or not.

Why?

We want to help children who may develop type 1 diabetes, by getting them the treatment they need sooner and stop them from becoming too unwell.

Who?
Children aged 3-13 years who do not already have type 1 diabetes can take part.

How?
The majority of children will only need a simple finger-prick blood test (page 2). Less than 1 in 100 will need some further blood tests.

Where?
You can do the finger-prick test with your child at home. We are also working with some schools, doctors surgeries and community centres to offer the screening test.
